My name is Sheena Yap Chan and today I have the privilege to share a bit of me and my journey through self confidence on this platform. To me, I think it’s important for women to be financially independent because it gives them the confidence to go out there and live life on their terms.
Today I would like to share how I was able to improve my self-confidence and provide some tips and words of wisdom to help you take action in your own life.
I run a 5 day weekly podcast called The Tao of Self Confidence where I share stories of Asian women who have gone their own struggles of confidence and how they are able to overcome them.
Many of my listeners has asked me if anyone has ever asked me the same questions that I ask my guests on the podcast and I thought this would be a perfect time to do that. So I do hope you enjoy this but mostly that you have a little ounce to take action in your own dream.
Sheena Yap Chan is the host of The Tao of Self Confidence podcast. She also provides coaching, tools and resources for women to help them in their own journey to self confidence.
Sheena is of Chinese descent born in Cebu City, Philippines and relocated to Toronto, Canada at the age of seven.
Favorite Self Confidence Quote:
Behind every successful woman is herself.
Definition of Self Confidence:
Having the courage to take action to live life on your own terms and be your authentic self without seeking approval from others. It’s about knowing you are enough and worthy to live that life as well.
It’s also about taking action on the things that scare you.
Life Before The Discovery of Self Confidence:
Sheena’s self esteem issues started from kindergarten when she failed kindergarten for coloring outside the lines.
Sheena also used to follow the crowd and was told what to do which was to go to school, get a job and never make any noise. Sheena felt trapped inside because she knew this wasn’t the life for her but was too scared to take that leap of faith because she thought she wasn’t able to make it and that other people might have thought she was crazy to do that.
It was also hard for Sheena to make a decision for herself because very insecure of herself. She would over analyze every situation and never thought she was good enough for anything. Sheena settled for a lot in life, such as her job, relationships with men and living life to please others.
The AHA Moment:
One day, Sheena received a call from her sister about her aunt just passed away from falling off a cliff. At first, Sheena was in total shock because she could not believe the truth. She kept her asking her sister if she was joking because it was something that you hear in the movies. Her aunt was able to do many things in life especially in her lates 50s like scuba diving, travelling and even ziplining. Her aunt was able to live more than most 20 and 30 year olds.
Her aunt’s death made Sheena realize how short life can be and how it can be taken away in an instant. That is when Sheena knew that she wanted to live life on her terms.
Her Life After the Discovery of Self Confidence:
Although it still took some time for Sheena to quit her job, she made it happen. She also sold her condo, her and her furniture and was able to travel to different places in the world, lived in Hawaii in the winter months, created an amazing podcast and so many other things that she never thought was ever possible in her own life.
Sheena still has days of self doubt or worries about the future, she surrounds herself with people and resources to remind her that she is worthy of a better life and that the Universe will always have her back no matter what happens.
One Self Confidence Tip for the Listener:
Learn to love yourself including your flaws. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes because those mistakes can lead you to your greatness. Take little steps to build self confidence and it will impact in a huge way in the long run.
Also, listen to amazing podcasts like mine to get that boost of confidence for the day. (I know its a mini shameless plug but its only because I truly love what I do.)
Blue Ocean Global Wealth: What do you enjoy most about your journey to help women discover their self-confidence?
Sheena: What I enjoy the most is getting messages from women (even men) about how the podcast has helped them in their own journey and are able to take action in their own lives. I never really knew what the outcome would be when I first decided to release my podcast.
There was a listener who started their own podcast from scratch because they have seen what I have done. When she first mentioned that she released her own podcast, I was so happy for her because I knew where was before and the struggles she had. It’s just proof that people are more capable than they realize to create a life they want to live in. Now that same person is helping other women with their self confidence. It’s a win/win situation
Blue Ocean Global Wealth: Sheena, when you are not helping other women discover their self-confidence, what interests & passions do you pursue?
Some of the things I love to do is work out, listen to music, read a good self help book, sometimes binge watch on Netflix and spending time with my family and friends.
